Read Faster: Learn to speed read to increase your reading speed

CALCULATE READING SPEED- http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/marketing/technology-research-centers/ereaders/speed-reader/index.html

Personal development legend Jim Rohn has this to say “The difference between where you are today and where you’ll be five years from now will be found in the quality of books you’ve read.” Well what if you can read 3 times as many books with just a 15 minute exercise! That is exactly what this post will do for you, it has already worked for me and I’ve had amazing feedback from other people who have tried it.

I’ve also created this amazing tool to help in other areas of life. http://www.businessgrowthlabs.com/dreamsdashboard/

Read 300% Faster in 15 Minutes

When you read you do not need to stop and read every word, your eyes make saccadic (jumps) movements across the page and your brain processes the words in that picture. If you have not done the exercises shown in the video, it is likely a person will jump around the page much more than they have to, losing time and even going BACKWARDS sometimes! Another way people lose lots of time when reading is they do not use their peripheral vision to their advantage, this means 50% of their field of vision is used up reading blank margins. Click the video below to learn the two secrets, that come from “The 4-Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferris, you can use to increase your reading speed 300% in 15 minutes.

Exercise

During all exercises if possible lay book on a flat surface and DO NOT worry about comprehension. Use best judgement when told to keep reading each line to a certain time limit.

Speed Reading Step 1- Test Initial Reading Speed by Clicking Link Above.

Speed Reading Step 2- Use a pen (lid on) or pencil to underline each word as you read focusing just above it. This gives your eyes something to track and allows for a consistent speed and decreasing fixation duration.

Technique (2 Minutes)- max.of 1 sec. per line increasing speed every page.
Speed (3 Minutes)- max.of 1/2 sec. per line increasing speed every page

Speed Reading Step 3- Still using pen to track but this time start and stop reading “x” words in from the end of the line. So in the sentence (Students used to enjoy reading 4 hours every day) in the first technique stage below you would begin reading with the word “used” and end on “every”, but still using your peripheral vision to read the first and last word. Just as you are reading this sentence but you can still see the edge of the computer screen.

Technique (1 Minute)- 1 word in from beginning and end (Max. 1 Sec. per line.)
Technique (1 Minute)- 2 words in from beginning and end (Max. 1 Sec. per line.)
Speed (3 Minutes)- 1 word in from beginning and end (Max. 1/2 Sec. per line.)

Speed Reading Step 4- Test Final Reading Speed by Clicking Link Above.

Speed Reading Step 5- Leave a comment below of your starting and finishing speed to show improvement.

Bonus Speed Reading Tip

Whatever speed you wish to read at, you should practice these exercises at 3x that word per minute (wpm). For example if you wish to read at 800 wpm you should practice at 2400 wpm. Think of speed reading as working out a muscle, the more you push yourself to read faster (lifting heavy weights) the easier it is to read at the pace you want with full comprehension (feels like lifting light weights that used to feel heavy). One more thing I have found is that you can continue to improve your reading speed if you do this exercise on a consistent basis. My routine is to do these exercises every saturday morning and after 3 weeks of doing this my reading had increased from 600 wpm to 900 wpm, and from the first time of doing this exercise it was all the way up from 250 wpm!

This one little exercise has had one of the most dramatic impacts on my business and personal growth as I am now able to gain, and then apply knowledge almost 4x as fast! This is what you can do also, therefore if what Jim Rohn says is correct in the next 5 years you will be able to gain the equivalent of 20 years experience if you had not had this exercise which takes 15 minutes!

Is this useful for ACT? like you just read it once with the super fast method and get the general idea and then do the question with a basic undertanding of the passage…. Has anyone tried this before?

Wow this actually worked, I went from 430 to 988. I have always been a good reader but i figure if i practice every day i could become a super reader at around 2000 in a month. I was skeptical at first also which is weird.

I've had so much failure with this while others are commenting such improvement. I hate this! I want to read faster. The other day I read around 180 wpm. the quickest I can get now is 260 wpm. Been practicing until my eyes hurt!

    1. practice reading at 30000 wpm it is very high wpm
    2. it is fastest readers who can read this

  19. rotfan77 says:

The reading needs to be one different passage the second time because know what it's about and you can fudge on the reading comprehension at the end, I did go through faster, but I missed a few things that were asked on the test if I hadn't read it the first time slowly I would not have known those?

  20. EpicodeCFK says:

Thank you so so much! I had to read a whole 500 page book in one day for a test tomorrow. This strategy helped me grow my words per second. Thank you SO MUCH!!! 🙂

  21. Teddy o/ says:

Yep, this is the real deal. I'm in uni and my average reading speed was 200 words per minute. After exercising my brain, with each speed reading test at uni I kept reading 50 words faster, even if I had two reading tests on the same day. It usually increased from 50-100, and today I just scored 500 words per minute
    Thank you so much!
